Never heard or read about "list based" calc views...
Where did you find that term?
Anyhow, the option to create calc views without measures goes hand in hand with the star join feature. In case you want to create a calc view that you want to use as a dimension then obviously it cannot have any measures.
That's when you use this kind of calc views.
Beyond that, measureless calc views can be used very similar to common SQL views and allow for some more flexibility while modelling with calc views.
As you might notice, the mode modeling scenarios the calc views support, the less you will need any of the other views. Eventually this will mean that at some point you can base the whole modeling on just a single view type.
Much easier and a lot less confusing.
