No this feature was not added in SPS 12. It is still in the product backlog and planned for development in the next release of HANA beyond SPS 12. In the mean time we would strongly suggest that you use a Sequence. The SELECT MAX approach you described will not work for exactly the kinds of reasons you described. The Sequence will work however.
