Hmm... well, I don't know about any fixed rule here.
But this one really looked like a conversion error, so it occurred to be an obvious next try to me to put explicit type casting into place.
I tend to think it could be advisable in general to use explicit type casting with the final assignment of the output variable.
Would be interesting to hear other experiences.
