Confusion about replication

Hi Gurus,

Numerous sources list three types of replication from ERP to Hana.  This link includes a graphic that appears in several Hana training manuals. http://businessobjectsbi4.blogspot.it/2012/11/sap-in-memory-reporting.html

The three are:

  • ETL,
  • Log Based  (SYBASE)
  • Trigger Based (SLT)

I understand ETL so will dismiss it from this discussion.

Log based (also known as Sybase) uses the base level log tables to capture changes. It is not recommended unless you’re part of the SAP RTC. It makes use of the Sybase replication agent which is already part of the ERP system. It also requires a replication server to be installed on Hana

Trigger based (also known as SLT) uses high level business layer entities. It requires the set-up of a replication server. SLT writes data to “logs” on the replication server. This process can be stopped and resumed. The replication server can perform complex transformations.

My training material covers three methods of replications:

  • ETL,
  • DXC
  • SLT.

At first glance it would appears DXC is another name for log based.

However DXC uses ERP’s built-in BW and effectively diverts the data flow that would normally travel to it and diverts it to Hana.  This description makes it sound quite different to log based.I

Can someone confirm these are not the same product and that there are in fact four main replication methods.

I understand log based is not for general use and this may be why it is not mentioned in the training material. However I an confused as to why SAP mention Log-based but not DXC in their general slides.

Thanks

Cliff
